Brixen to Mittenwald – 13 July 2011

Woke early today –about 6.00 – and then fell asleep again so did not get up until 8.00.  Left hotel without bothering with breakfast.  Found Autostrada with no trouble and were soon at the Austrian border where we had to buy a vignette( motorway pass) for €7.90.  Good job we did as police checking at the toll station.

The motorway runs above Innsbruck which is stuck between a very large rock and a wet place.  Certainly the rocks in these parts are huge.  Journey was so good we nearly missed the turn off for Mittenwald.  Parked and found we were about 50 metres from Hotel Bichlerhof where the staff were very welcoming.  Room ready, nice room with balcony.

Went for a walk round the town which is very alpine with many painted houses and window boxes full of flowers.  Best of all it’s cooler by about 10°C and we even had a few spots of rain.   Had lunch of gratin potatoes.  German food and language a big mystery.  No doubt all will be revealed in the fullness of time.
After a shower we walked around the village to find the correct route into the mountains (there are roadworks everywhere) and then we ate at a restaurant near the hotel. The waiter was unbelievably patient with we ignoramuses, the result being we enjoyed roast beef and lamb shank albeit in German portions. When it comes to food, restraint isn’t in the German vocabulary. Left the restaurant into pouring rain.
