Verona – 10th July 2011

Too bloody hot for Jane to venture out today but Tony went for a walk in the hope of finding a food shop or supermarket open on Sunday. An hour and a half later he reappeared having decided to cross all the bridges in Verona on the river Adige. Only the bread shop open so it was lovely fresh bread and jam for breakfast and bread, cheese, tomatoes and egg for lunch.  When Tony took some things round to the car just before we went to the Opera the car door seals had melted a bit in the heat and door was difficult to open!

We ate at the same place as last night, only this time Jane had a galletto  (which is a young cock that had been flattened) or she would have if it hadn’t been desiccated in their oven while I had fettucine with porcini mushrooms.

Aida was great, a superb setting for an opera like this.  However, just after the start of the final act, what we assumed were lights in the sky from the opera turned out to be sheet lightning.  Strong breeze blew up, opera abandoned and audience left rapidly.  Hadn’t gone far before the heavens opened – thunder, lightning and hailstones!  Got well drenched, got cool and got home at 1.20.
Verona's Duomo.

The huge redbrick church of Saint Anastasia.

Aida at the amphitheatre, Verona.

Just before the deluge.

Even in Italy, you can never escape Leicester...
