Pleasant, if uninteresting, run to Augsburg – arrived about 10.15 and walked into the city. Weather has turned chilly and rather windy and neither of us were wearing anything warm. We had breakfast in the city centre – 2 eggs and bacon for Jane and croissant and jam for Tony (this was his second breakfast having had bread and jam in Schongau).
We visited the Fuggerei, a small enclosed city within Augsburg, founded in 1521 for the needy citizens (a bit like almshouses). People still live there and pay €0.88 a year rent, but they have to be Catholic and pray three times a week for the founder, Jakob Fugger. There is a bit of PC going on here because in an old document his real name was Fucker, which is not so acceptable now as it was then.
Also visited Cathedral with some interesting wood carvings on the choir stalls and then we caught the tram back (another first!) to the hotel (Villa Arborea €99). This is a very good hotel, probably the best we have stayed in with wonderfully helpful staff.
We arrived back at 2.15 just before the rain started. Germany has nice, tidy, clean towns but they are basically boring and not really worth the effort it takes to visit them.
During the evening we ate at an Italian restaurant – lasagne and spaghetti which was OK.
