Verona – Venice – Verona

Yesterday evening we bought some tickets from the tobacconists so we could catch the bus to and from the station this morning.  We decided to visit Venice and were up and about early in order to catch the 7.59 train.  Expensive at €20 each one way but the fast air conditioned option won over the slow hot €6.35 one.

Arrived in Venice at 9.10 and already the place was hot and crowded and, like Verona, far busier than when we were last here.  St. Marks Square had some scaffolding up and restoration taking place.  Bridge of Sighs almost obscured by an advertising hoarding!!  It does still have charm but we have decided that if we ever come here again we need to stay here and experience the place after the day tripping hordes (like us) have gone home.

Had long wait at station to buy tickets on way back.  Lots and lots of youngsters lugging huge backpacks around – rather them than me.  Back in flat for 3.30.
We had a rest and shower and then went out for our passeggiata and our cena (evening meal) at a pizzeria - not brilliant and €48. Eating out is very expensive here.
Signore Barnaby over the Canale Grande, Venice.

Ponte Rialto, Venice.

San Marco campanile.

St Marks Duomo and edge of the Doge's palace.

Odd bits of timber stuck in seabed.

Signore Barnaby determined to be the Doge's b*******. (Groan)

Church of St Zacharias. Christ seems to be emerging from the altar.

St Zacharias. Splendidly awful chapel altar.
Suburban stress highlighted by traffic snarl - up.

Jane on the Rialto Bridge. It looks like a pose in front of a picture.
