Today we decided to go to Vicenza, the home of Andrea Palladio, probably the greatest architect ever. But first it was off to the Opera Box Office. We have booked tickets for the Barber of Seville and Aida - €396 – ouch, but what the hell. This is why we have come back here.
Train took half an hour to cover the 50 miles to Vicenza in air conditioned luxury.
The city itself appeared very prosperous and has been successful in amalgamating the old buildings with the new. Palladio’s creations are almost ubiquitous and they all display a kind of serenity that proportion and perfect perspective give to great things.
Very hot today, and the walk from the station frazzled us both. At a local bar, a ritual was taking place that happens the world over (or so I’m reliably informed), the payday doctors’ party, complete with nurse in a tutu doing what a nurse in a tutu would do.
More prosaically, then went to the local grocer’s for our evening meal of pork steaks with pepper sauce, tomatoes, mushrooms and beans. Very tasty, too.
