Had a walk round Reggio before we set off and the place was spotless at 8.00. No rubbish anywhere and the piazza where the band had been playing had been cleared of all the chairs etc. Journey was fine except for a deviation in place round Mantova but hotels were signposted so no problem. Hotel ABC has air-con which is good as it seems to be hotter in Mantova than Reggio.
Mantova has 3 lakes – Superior, Mezzo and Inferior – and the central town has many impressive palaces and churches which we walked round for an hour or two until we got a bit tired and hot so back to hotel for rest. Spent an hour on the computer in the afternoon looking for a hotel in Verona for the opera and came across a studio apartment so have decided to stay in Verona for 6 days and give ourselves a better chance of seeing 1-2 operas. Emailed apartment owner and went out for meal.
Evening meal was very nice. Ate outside in the Piazza Erbe – very good for people watching – surrounded by tall old buildings changing colour as the light faded and the street lights came on. Tony had sea bass and Jane lamb chops.
Got back to hotel about 11.15 to find a reply to our email confirming we have the apartment booked. Yippee. This means we can take a couple of day trips on the train from Verona, maybe to Venice, Lake Garda, Vicenza etc.
